Injured students return to school following Cherry bus accident

Bus crash involving Cherry students sends a dozen people to the hospital

Ten students along with two adults ended up in the hospital on Thursday after a crash involving a school bus.

UPDATE: St. Louis Schools Superintendent Dr. Reggie Engebritson has provided an update on the students injured in the September 12 Cherry bus-vehicle accident.

“Some of the students returned last Friday and many returned today. We have additional support on hand for them, if needed. We are doing our best to meet them where they are at, emotionally, so we can support them and get them through this very scary experience,” Engebritson relayed to WDIO on Monday, September 16.

ORIGINAL STORY: A Cherry school bus was involved in bus-vehicle accident at the intersection of Hwy 5 and Townline Rd. in Hibbing according to Chief Erik Jankila of the Hibbing fire department. The crash with the vehicle, a Toyota RAV4, caused the bus to roll over.

The Minnesota State Patrol released the names of the drivers in the accident. They say Shawn Allen Lindula, 52 of Iron, Minn. was driving the school bus, and 19-year-old, Svea Lynn Snickers of Alborn, Minn. was the driver of the Toyota RAV4.

Lindula was taken to Essentia Health in Virginia with non-life threatening injuries. Svea Snickers was sent to Duluth with life threatening injuries.

One of the students on the bus was Heather Hadrava’s 13-year-old daughter. Hadrava said her daughter’s iPhone has crash detection technology, and automatically contacted 911.

“Then she called me, and she was hysterical. I thought maybe another bus would come get them, because I didn’t realize how bad it was. But I went and picked her up,” Hadrava said.

They also went to the doctor to get checked out, just in case. “I’m just glad it wasn’t worse than it was,” Hadrava added.

“All passengers of the bus were able to exit the bus on their own and were triaged and cared for in order of severity of injuries on scene. Law enforcement assisted in helping to count and confirm all students,” explained Jankila. “A total of 11 parties – 1 adult and 10 students — were transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries to Fairview Range in Hibbing or Essentia Health Virginia. All were transported within less than an hour of the crash.”

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office had originally reported 12 student injuries to WDIO, but they have since corrected that to 10 students and 2 adults.

The driver of the RAV4 has life-threatening injuries and was airlifted using LifeLink III.

“Hibbing Fire/EMS responded with four ambulances and three fire trucks and requested mutual aid assistance from the neighboring towns of Chisholm, Buhl, Eveleth and Virginia,” said Jankila. “Also on scene were St. Louis County Sheriff’s, Minnesota State Patrol, Cherry Fire/First Responders, and several first-responders.”

The crash in under investigation.
