Children and Cops gather to grow community bond with cars
The Duluth Police Department is once again hosting their kids and cop cars event. As all different kinds of vehicles and multiple departments gathered together at Bayfront Park to interact and show their tools to the children and community.
Every year the officers down at the West Station go around the community and ask different places top to contribute. From the bomb disposal squad, the rescue squad, the DNR helicopter, and just ask all these people to come in so the kids can see them up close. You know, not every day that everyone gets to explore a cop car, or the command post every day.
Ken Zwak, a lieutenant of the Duluth police department, shared their drive as law enforcement to have a community event like this.
“It’s the backbone of the Duluth Police Department is building relationships with our community members. They’re the ones that we serve every day, and we don’t want them just to know the cop is in uniform. I want them to know me as Ken. That’s the way we provide our best service.”
This is even further shown by Angela Eblom, Duluth Police Department of the west station, admin assistant, expresses the positive interactions and relationships to grow between cops and the children of the area.
“I think the main hope is just the positive interaction. You know, to see you come down, you have the officers handing out ice cream, lots of really good ice cream, stickers, tattoos, coloring, just the positive interaction is what we’re looking for and to build on that within the community.”
They had refreshments of free ice cream, cookies, and activities filling the day. As families and community members showed up to see what goes on inside and interact with the local law enforcement.
