After last night’s severe storm, many Northland communities are busy with the aftermath of hail. Chisholm residents repair their windows and roofs from damages. Several cars left with cracked windshields, patio furniture overturned even roofs left in disrepair.

Samantha Hannine, a resident in Chisholm says she hasn’t seen weather like this in the past five years.

“A lot of friends windshield got broken on their cars, our car got dented, the hood got dented, lots of dents in hoods for sure. We were kind of hanging out here and watching the construction with New Chisholm Elementary. Then saw the clouds rolling in and saw lightning bolts hit the ground,” Hannine said. “So I got the kids inside and I sat and kind of watched and baseball sized hail came and hit the road and as soon as it started coming down I went inside, got the kids and got them away from the windows and kind of hunkered down. I’ve never seen anything like it in my whole life.”

As Chisholm residents repair their homes from hail, here are some tips to practice on staying safe before a severe storm:

• Bring pets inside
• Shelter vehicles
• Shelter outdoor items
• Be prepared for electrical outages
• Listen to weather alerts

Also when a hail storm does begin near your home there are several safety recommendations:

• If you are outdoors, go indoors immediately
• Once inside close all drapes, blinds or shades to prevent broken window glass and hailstones from entering your home
• Move to a basement, cellar or other level of the building not directly below the roof

If you’re on the road when the hail storm begins make sure to stay in your vehicle and slow down or stop. Roads may become slippery during the storm. Once you have pulled over safely, turn your back to windows or cover yourself with a blanket to protect yourself from broken glass.
