Community concert and art exhibition honors Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives

On Saturday November 9th, community members came together to honor Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives (MMWIR) through art and music at the No More MMIWR Concert and Art Exhibit.

“You know, I never thought this would happen to us until it did. And it’s just something that never leaves my mind. You know, I go to college and it’s hard to focus with him on my mind and looking at the board and I work midnights and he’s on my mind all night,” said niece of Peter Martin, Izzy Proulx.

The concert and art exhibit featured musical artists including Keith Secola Band, Micheal LaughingFox Charette, Oshkii Giizhik Singers, Jaron Andrews, Giwose Inini, Mitch McVicker Music, and Remedy Drive. The art exhibition gave room for local artists to display their artwork; along with giving a voice to MMIWR families, community partners and organizations.

Proceeds from the event goes to creating a local “MMIWR mutual aid fund” in the Twin Ports and beyond. The fund will help support families of MMIWR, local search initiatives, MMIWR advocacy and awareness, and local community led events.
