Confusion and frustration over the Remote Area Border Crossing Permit program

Congressmen from the Northland are pushing the Canadians for answers about a permit program that's in limbo.

Congressman Pete Stauber, along with fellow Republicans Tom Tiffany and Jack Bergman, are asking for answers about the Remote Area Border Crossing Permit (RABC) program.

They’ve sent a letter to the Canadian government, asking about the status.

The program allows people to cross into Canada in certain remote areas, without having to go through a port of entry point. Stauber’s office said this allows many Minnesotans to easily recreate, visit family, and properly maintain their property north of the border

Stauber told WDIO on Friday that the program has been shutdown, and now people have permits that are expired and can’t renew them.

“It’s very disappointing to have this shut off to Minnesotans,” Stauber said. “We’re getting very little answers from the government. And they are going through changes, and it doesn’t look like this is a high priority for them. Maybe after the elections. And I want to be transparent with people, that it might be a long time before there’s an ultimate decision.”
