Construction on Highway 23 Sandstone to Askov to run through August
Construction got underway on the stretch of Highway 23 between Sandstone and Askov in Pine County on Monday. According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT,) initial work begins with shoulder closures at the intersection of Highway 23 and Highway 18.
Next week, the ramp onto southbound I-35 from Highway 23 north of Sandstone will close. Traffic will be detoured on southbound Highway 23 to the other onramp from that highway to I-35, according to MnDOT. This work will begin on May 13.
The duration of this construction project is expected to run from may to August, 2024 and cost $5.34 million. The public will experience a smoother ride and improved load carrying capacity. MnDOT says the project will also lower maintenance costs.
MnDOT officials say the project includes 7.48-miles of pavement rehabilitation to Highway 23. No work is proposed at the Bridge 9792 (over I-35) and Bridge 58002 over Kettle River. Construction includes mill and overlay, adding turn lanes, culvert repair/replacements, storm sewer additions and more.
