August Lake Fire contained after 5 days
Update: as of 11 a.m. Friday morning, the August Lake Fire has been 100% contained. Ground resources continue to work the fire by mopping up (putting out hot spots near the control line down to mineral soil) and monitoring precipitation. No additional resources needed.
Lightning is suspected to have started a fire in the Superior National Forest.
The forest service said someone spotted the blaze yesterday from the air.
It’s about 3 acres in size right now, and is being called the August Lake Fire. According to the forest service, it’s about 15 miles southeast of Ely, in an area with heavy vegetation and limited access.
Crews from the ground and the air are working on suppression.
