Fire at Dyno Nobel near Biwabik is out, evacuation warning is over
Crews responded to a fire on Tuesday morning at Dyno Nobel in Biwabik Township, which supplies industrial explosives and blasting services used by the mining industry. The call came in around 10:45 a.m.
According to the Northland Fire Wire, authorities evacuated the area within one mile of the plant.
According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s office, the fire was quickly contained and extinguished. Evacuation guidelines have also been lifted. The Sheriff’s Office determined the fire had started near an exhaust vent. The amount of damages are unknown at this time. No one was hurt.
A Dyno Nobel spokesperson provided WDIO with the following statement:
At around 10 a.m. CT this morning, an employee noticed smoke and flames in a boiler room that is part of Dyno Nobel’s facility in Biwabik, Minnesota. The on-site team followed emergency response procedures as trained, including evacuating the site, contacting the fire department, and restricting access. The fire was successfully extinguished without any injuries or heat exposure to explosive products or sensitive materials on site. The team is working to ensure there are no further risks before re-starting operations, and an in-depth investigation will take place in coming days.
Dyno Nobel appreciates the quick response and safety-focused actions of the local fire department and the Biwabik team.
The Gilbert Police Department, East Range Police Dept., Biwabik Township Fire Dept., City of Biwabik Fire Dept., Fayal Township Fire Dept. Lakeland Fire Dept. and St. Louis Emergency Management assisted at the scene.
