Duluth man charged with attempted murder after fire incident

A Duluth man is facing 30 years behind bars after a vehicle fire and attempted house fire earlier this month. 21-year-old Brett Budreau has been charged with attempted murder and attempted arson.

Shortly after 1:00am on May 6, authorities responded to the 2200 block of W 3rd Street after receiving a call from Budreau’s brother. According to the criminal complaint, Budreau showed up at his brother’s house with a can of gasoline. Authorities smelled gasoline around the house, on the porch, and a broken window. Budreau also attempted to start his brother’s vehicle on fire after breaking windows, denting the hood, and pouring gasoline inside the vehicle, according to the criminal complaint.

Officers located Budreau shortly after 4:00am, after he had checked himself into Essentia’s Behavioral Health Unit. Budreau told officers he was using the gasoline to try and kill his brother, according to the criminal complaint.

Both charges are felony level offenses.
