Esko man about to mark 50 years of raising bison
Don Solwold is a busy guy, and drives all kinds of vehicles. After all, he’s raising bison at the Quarter Master Buffalo farm in Esko.
The 91-year-old has been doing so for 50 years this September.
“My intention was to buy a farm, and raise buffalos on it. And that’s what I did,” he said. “There’s probably not a species you can name that has a greater incentive to not trust humans. We brought them to the brink of extinction once.”
Solwold used to sell commercially, to places like St. Luke’s, the Buffalo House, and the Duluth Grill.
Now he sells the yearlings. And advises the next generation on farming.
The current herd includes about 20 animals. “They get a little more domesticated each generation,” he explained.
He was a military man, having served with the 148th Fighter Wing. And he and his late wife Marlene have five daughters. A couple of them who live close help out quite a bit at the farm, along other family and neighbors.
Solwold admits he’s more retired than he wishes to be. “But there’s only so much you can do as you get older. I’m grateful for the help from my family.”
Still, he sure seems to do a lot more than most 91-year-olds. “I thank the Lord for every day I have here,” he added.
