Victim identified in Wednesday’s Pine County accident

One person was killed in a an accident in Pine County at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, 67-year-old, Gary Eugene Thompson of Hinckley died from his injuries. Authorities say the roads were snow and ice covered at the time of the crash.
The State Patrol says Thompson was driving a 1998 Ford F150, westbound on Highway 48 at mile post 6 in Barry Township when he lost control and slid into the front of a semi truck traveling eastbound. The pickup ended up off the road on the north side of Highway 48, with the semi ending up in the south ditch.
The report says Thompson was not wearing a seatbelt. The 50-year-old driver of the 2007 Peterbuilt Semi and 2022 LBT Trailer was not injured.
Barry Township is just east of Hinckley, Minnesota on Highway 48.
The Pine County Sheriff’s Office, Essentia Ambulance, Hinckley Fire and Mille Lacs assisted on scene.
