Fire destroys Ironwood floral shop overnight
Firefighters were called to a report of a fire late Tuesday night at Lutey’s Floral Shop in Ironwood. According to a release from the Ironwood Public Safety Department the call came in at 11:36 p.m. The caller said that there was a lot of smoke coming from inside the building at 101 S Mansfield Street.
When Public Safety Officers arrived on scene, they found fire in the basement and the ground level of the building. Additional request for assistance from Xcel Energy and the Hurley Fire Department due to close proximity of major power lines.
Officials say the owner of the floral shop lives next door, and the fire was close to spreading. PSO Kevin Stevens and PSO Colin Clausen went into the home and woke the resident.
Both Ironwood Public Safety and Hurley Fire Department utilized their ladder trucks and several ground lines to extinguish the fire. Officers battled the fire for approximately 5 hours. There was no damage to other structures and officers were able protect part of the greenhouse that is attached to the building.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Hurley Fire Department, Xcel Energy, Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, Beacon Ambulance and Victim Services assisted in this incident.
