Fire destroys vacant duplex in Duluth, public asked to avoid area

A vacant duplex in Lincoln Park was engulfed in flames late Sunday night, prompting a large response from the Duluth Fire Department.
Firefighters were dispatched at 10:20 p.m. Sunday evening to a structure fire at 2226 W. First St. Heavy smoke was visible from blocks away, leading command to call for a second alarm before crews arrived.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the two-and-a-half-story side-by-side duplex fully involved, with flames consuming all floors and all four sides of the structure. Crews from Lincoln Park, Headquarters, Spirit Valley, Duluth Heights, and UMD worked defensively to battle the fire and protect nearby buildings. Due to the fire’s intensity and the structure’s instability, crews have not entered the building.
The duplex is considered a total loss, with significant roof and structural collapses. While the fire is largely extinguished, firefighters are expected to remain on scene for an undetermined amount of time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s Office.
Authorities are warning residents of icy conditions in the area due to the water used to fight the fire. Duluth Public Works and Utilities crews will work overnight to clear ice buildup.
The public is asked to avoid W. First Street between 22nd Avenue W. and 23rd Avenue W., as well as Superior Street in the same area.
The Duluth Fire Department thanked the Duluth Police Department, St. Louis County 911 dispatch, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department, Minnesota Power, and Duluth Public Works and Utilities for their assistance.
