Firefighters take old hoses and turn them into toys for animals at Lake Superior Zoo
The animals at the Lake Superior Zoo use the shapes made out of old hoses for enrichment and to play.
What to do with old hoses that are beyond repair. Well, the Duluth Fire Department did some work to turn them into something useful for the Lake Superior Zoo.
Lead Zoo Keeper Emily Perala worked with the fire department to teach them how to turn firehose into enrichment items that can be given to the animals.
Wednesday, they delivered the toys. And Tundra and Banks, the big brown bears, loved theirs. So did the barnyard animals.
Heath Wiersma, a fire equipment operator, shared that it was the first time he’d ever made anything out of the old hoses before.
