First on the scene, woman details Highway 2 crash
WDIO’s sister-station KSTP 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS spoke with a woman who was in the area when the fatal accident on Highway 2 near Nelson Road in Arrowhead Township happened. Katy Augusta rushed in to help the victims right after the crash.
“It was very traumatic. I mean, there was nothing left of that car. Nobody could have survived it,” Katy Augusta told KSTP regarding the four people killed inside the SUV. Augusta said she was one of about a dozen good Samaritans who stopped to help. The group included an emergency room doctor and a nurse.
“I think our instinct was to go and help and see what we could do,” Augusta said.
The State Patrol is investigating why the semi-truck driver did not stop as he approached the work zone.
According to a Minnesota State Patrol incident report, a GMC Acadia, Ford Escape, Mack Semi and Honda Pilot were stopped in traffic due to construction when an International Semi-truck traveling at high speeds hit the stopped vehicles.
“I saw him come out of that truck and you could tell he was devastated,” Augusta said.
Augusta said she was able to help two women in one of the other vehicles but her heart goes out to the loved ones of those killed.
“It was awful and I just pray for the family and the parents of those little girls,” Augusta said.
On Thursday, State Patrol confirmed that all four occupants of the Honda Pilot — 65-year-old Vincent Dow, 66-year-old Bonnie Dow, nine-year-old Hope Oakgrove and nine-year-old Charlotte White — died as a result of the crash.
While the driver of the Ford Escape was not hurt, an 84-year-old woman passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The drivers of both the Mack Semi, a 45-year-old man, and the International Semi, a 63-year-old man, have non-life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.
Both occupants of the GMC Acadia were not injured in the crash.
The accident remains under investigation.
