Ely Lake has been getting busy, with anglers practicing for the upcoming MN Junior Bass event on Thursday.
On Monday, we caught up with members of Floodwood’s fishing team, the school’s first.
Tyler Zobel, a senior, said, “I just wanted to experience new things and be part of a team. Go fishing and have a really good time.”
Also on the boat that day, 2023 grad Carter Grant, who added, “I’m excited to have a team. And I had been looking to do it as a sport. But we couldn’t get a team started till Troy came along.”
Troy Otterson is their coach, and also the social worker at Floodwood.
“I believe fishing is an important part of stress of management,” he explained. “There are eight guys on the team, and they are all great. All the way down to 7th grade.”
The event is Thursday from 8am-1pm on Ely Lake.
Other teams like Grand Rapids, Esko, and Nashwauk-Keewatin will also be fishing, according to Otterson.
