Fond du Lac flag dedicated at Denfeld High School
The Fond du Lac flag received a place of honor between the Minnesota State flag and the American flag in the Denfeld High School auditorium during a dedication ceremony Monday night, November 25.
“We have been working on this project as a concept for several years now and as a practical matter since about June of this year when we were gifted a Fond du Lac flag at our Graduation Pow Wow and members of the Fond du Lac Honor guards asked us to display it in our school,” explained JP Rennquist, the American Indian Home School Liaison and Advocacy and Historic Denfeld Auditorium Co-manager.
The ceremony was held prior to the Varsity Girls Basketball game and featured several speakers and Native music.
For Principal Tom Tuksen, it was important to recognize and celebrate the diversity of Denfeld’s student body.
“It was a lot of pride that we were doing something to normalize the diversity of our student body by representing and celebrating a culture that makes up a large percentage of our student population,” said Tuksen, describing his feelings during the ceremony. “So, for me, my heart was swelling. It felt tremendous to be able to recognize our kids and, again, for them to be able to see themselves represented here.”
Tuksen said the school is hoping to do more to celebrate its students in the future.
