Former UMD Bulldog Adam Johnson passed away from a hockey accident

The Elite Hockey League and the Nottingham Panthers have confirmed that Hibbing native Adam Johnson, 29, passed away following a freak accident in Saturday’s game.

“The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night,” the team posted Sunday. “Adam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding ice hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him. The Club will dearly miss him and will never ever forget him.”

The Elite League has postponed all of Sunday’s games in the league and is asking everyone to respect the privacy of Johnson’s family at this time.

The Elite Hockey League also postponed all of their games scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 29.

Johnson started his hockey career in Hibbing and played for the UMD Bulldogs before moving on to the Penguins and then the Nottingham Panthers in England.

“As talented as he was on the ice, he was an even better person,” UMD Men’s Hockey posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Former UMD Hockey player Adam Johnson is believed to be suffering a major injury while playing with the Nottingham Panthers today. Johnson is from Hibbing, Minnesota.

According to fans, Johnson is believed to have taken a skate to the neck during the match-up. “Terrifying situation for Adam Johnson. He took a skate blade to the neck and needed to have CPR performed on him.” This is according to a fan and is not currently confirmed.

According to a tweet sent out on “X” formerly known as Twitter from the Panthers, “fans have been asked to leave the building due to a major medical emergency.”

UMD Men’s Hockey shared a statement on behalf of the injury that says “our thoughts are with Adam Johnson, his family, friends and teammates.”

29-year-old Johnson is from Hibbing where he started his hockey career. He then played at UMD moving onto the NHL where he played with the Pittsburg Penguins for a period. He now plays for the England based team, the Nottingham Panthers.

This is Johnson’s first season with the Nottingham Panthers. This is a developing story, updates will be provided as they are released.
