The Great Lakes Aquarium is saying goodbye to Chewie the Zebra Shark. He is headed to the Kansas City Zoo, where he will have more space. Chewie has grown a lot during his time at the Great Lakes Aquarium.
He came to Duluth as a juvenile back in November of 2017. He quickly became an Aquarium favorite as members and visitors watched him grow to maturity and his current weight of nearly 80 pounds.
Chewie is part of the zebra shark Species Survival Plan, which is a collaborative program involving many zoos and aquariums that ensures that individuals from threatened populations are placed in appropriate locations, both for their welfare and the welfare of the species.
The Aquarium worked with the SSP to find a new placement for him which led them to the Kansas City Zoo.
Chewie’s final day on exhibit is Tuesday, May 2.
