Governor Walz signs Physical Education Standards Bill
Governor Tim Walz today signed the Physical Education Standards Bill (Chapter 17, House File 112) into law on Monday. According to the governor’s office, the move will postpone the next review and revision of the physical education standards from the 2022-2023 school year to the 2026-2027 school year.
The bill was authored by Rep. Laurie Pryor, (DFL) from District 49A and Senator Steve Cwodzinski, (DFL). Read More: Chapter 17, House File 112
In 2017, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) adopted the most recent Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) physical education standards, replacing the National Association of Sport and Physical Education standards.
The governor’s office says delaying this standards review process will provide relief to physical education teachers by allowing them to focus on implementing the current standards for students.
