Grand Rapids man donates a replica of a license plate topper from President Coolidge’s three month stay in Douglas County in 1928

A Grand Rapids man donates a piece of history to the Douglas County Historical Society.

A license topper that is from the summer Calvin Coolidge spent in Douglas County has been donated to the Douglas County Historical Society.

Superior was home to the Summer White House back in 1928.

That’s because President Calvin Coolidge spent the whole summer in Douglas County. His office was in the old Central High School library.

“He spent a lot of time fly fishing on the Brule,” explained Jon Winter, the Business Manager of the Douglas County Historical Society.

An antique appraiser from Grand Rapids told us a friend found a license plate topper from that era. Denny Mager bought it from his friend.

It says Wisconsin Summer White House, 1928.

He wanted to make some replicas. It took some work, but he was able to get it done.

Last week, he donated one of them to the Historical Society. There, they have an exhibit dedicated to that visit. They have the desk Coolidge sent out to use.

“My intention was to donate one to this museum, it belongs here. It’s part of their history,” Mager said.

Winter said they are grateful. “It’s another addition, something to talk about, always fun to have bits and pies to talk about when you’re giving a tour or people are doing a self-tour.”

You can visit the museum Wednesday-Saturday, and it’s free! For more info: https://www.douglashistory.org/
