Ice safety reminders ahead of the busy angling season

A few reminders about being safe during ice fishing season

As ice anglers get ready to go out, a few things to remember to bring with you to keep safe.

It’s almost ice fishing season. A group of people called the testers are going out and checking ice conditions, and reporting back to Marine General in Duluth.

“It’s pretty amazing how areas where less than 10 days ago we were fishing in boats, and today they’re standing on six inches of ice,” shared Russ Francisco, owner of Marine General. And there are a few things to remember before you head out.

Bring gear like ice picks and rope with you. Some jackets are now inflatable, and can keep you up in the water so you can climb out.

The Duluth Fire Department does cold water training. But they would prefer you stay warm and dry.

Dan Sarvi, a firefighter with DFD, acknowledged that people will be fishing in the harbor eventually. “Make sure you check the wind direction. And keep in mind the shipping lane is still open. Tell someone when you’re going and when you’ll be back,” he told us.

The Minnesota DNR reminds people that no ice is 100% safe.
