5th graders study outside for Youth Water Summit
Over 350 students from ISD 318 Grand Rapids and Bigfork, ISD 316 Greenway and St. Joseph’s school gathered on Tuesday at the Itasca County Fairgrounds for the 9th annual 5th Grade Youth Water Summit. The event is sponsored by the Itasca Waters, ISD 318 and Itasca Area Community Education. This is the first summit following a two-year hiatus.
The students got to experience water science firsthand, with over 40 presenters. Storm Track Chief Meteorologist Justin Liles was one of the presenters, talking about weather forecasting and science.
At each learning station, students have the opportunity to learn about the importance of water and the vital role it plays. Organizers say the goals for this event cover the chemistry of water and related systems, quantity and quality issues, water safety, and environmental awareness, hands-on lessons, how to be a good steward for water, and applying critical thinking and problem-solving skills to water challenges.
Each year the Itasca Soil and Water Conservation District assists with the presentation.
