March 15th: Rain, snow, and increasing winds

Rain, snow, and increasing winds

Many of us likely heard a rumble of thunder early this morning. Rain will likely continue through the early afternoon before we start to see some light snow. This period for rain may lead to some localized flooding due to rapid runoff from the quick melting. There is also the chance of ponding in low areas because the ground is still frozen.

Precipitation will transfer from west to east and a mix of rain and snow is expected by the afternoon hours. Light to very locally moderate snowfall for north-central Minnesota forecast for Saturday, as rainfall transitions from west to east, through the morning and afternoon. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Koochiching, Northern Itasca, and Beltrami Counties from 7 am to 7 pm Saturday. Heavy mixed precipitation transitioning to moderate to heavy snow is expected. Total snow accumulations between 4 and 6 inches and ice accumulations are possible too. Locally heavy snow accumulations to 8 inches possible.

Little to no snow accumulation is expected in northwest Wisconsin. Blustery northwesterly winds will increase Saturday afternoon and are forecast to be strongest Saturday night into Sunday morning, gusting 30 to 40 mph. Light snow ends Sunday morning but areas to our east may see it linger into the afternoon hours.
