As September first kicks off Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MOCA) is kicking off a month full of events leading to their 11th Annual Light Duluth Teal Gala.

“September is ovarian cancer awareness month. And September 28th, we will be hosting our 11th Light Duluth Teal Gala at the DECC. It’s a wonderful evening. It starts with a cocktail reception, dinner, a very inspirational program with a Duluth survivor, wonderful story of hope, as well as a researcher speaking about the latest research. We have a live and silent auction. We have games. It’s just a great event. Very inspirational. Come and enjoy,” said Kristine Greer, ovarian cancer survivor and board member for MOCA.

MOCA was formed in 1999 by a group of ovarian cancer survivors. Greer created the Light Duluth Teal Gala, and joined up with MOCA in 2017, becoming a member and leader.

“Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance supports women and their families going through ovarian cancer. We also educate the public and the medical community about this disease, as well as raise funds for very important research. We have raised over $12 million to date. So, we are trying to make a difference,” said Greer.

The Gala will coincide with the annual lighting of local landmarks teal – including the DECC, Glensheen Mansion, Pier B Resort and Hotel, Giant Voices Building and Maurices.

MOCA look to paint the town teal all September long with support for those with ovarian cancer.

“Ovarian cancer is a very under-recognized disease. It’s very difficult to diagnose. There is no early detection test. So, we want to raise awareness for this disease. We want to save lives,” said Greer.
