Lake Superior Zoo welcomes cotton-top tamarin twins

An important moment for the Lake Superior Zoo as they welcome twin cotton-top tamarins, a critically endangered species.

An exciting moment for the Lake Superior Zoo, as they announce that a pair of critically endangered cotton-top tamarins have welcomed twins to the family!

The babies were born on September 15th. Mira and Deno are the proud parents. You can see them from 12pm-2pm in the Primate Conservation Center. The older siblings are helping out too.

Currently, there are 215 cotton-top tamarins in AZA accredited facilities worldwide, making this birth a significant contribution to their conservation.

According to the zoo, the cotton-top tamarin is currently classified as critically endangered, with an estimated population of fewer than 2,000 mature individuals remaining in the wild. Their primary habitat is restricted to northern Colombia, where they face significant threats from habitat destruction due to deforestation and the illegal pet trade
