Lake Superior Zoo rescues over 200 animals from SeaQuest

Local news, sports, weather presented by the WDIO News Team

The Lake Superior Zoo is taking nearly 200 animals from SeaQuest. The Roseville location closed for good just a couple weeks prior. WDIO’s sister station KSTP reported that SeaQuest filed for Bankruptcy back in December. Additionally, investigative reports from KSTP found “multiple instances of putting animals and people in danger.”

Lake Superior Zoo notes that the enclosure were smaller than what the Association of Zoos and Aquariums recommends for the animals’ well-being. In total the zoo the zoo has welcomed welcomed 172 budgies, golden conure, reticulated python, military macaw, Catalina macaw, 2 eclectus parrots (male and female) and a capybara.

A team from the Minnesota Zoo was there Wednesday pitching in to help house the SeaQuest animals.

“One of the great things about Zoos and Aquariums within AZA is that we are all on one big team. Each AZA Zoo has aligned missions and goals and when situations like these arise, it is a great time when we can collaborate and share our spaces and expertise at our various institutions,” said Lake Superior Zoo’s Director of Animal Management and Facilities, Lizzy Larson.

The majority of the rescued animals are being quarantined behind the scenes at the Willard Munger Animal Care Center. Guests will be able to see the reticulated python, who is quarantining in the Griggs Learning Center.

The Lake Superior Zoo is raising funds to provide the animals with the vet care they need. You can donate here.
