Learning to redevelop Duluth Brownfields, better know as contaminated properties

Learning to redevelop Brownfields

Historically, Duluth has a lot of old areas known as Brownfields, or industrial and commercial spaces that may have been contaminated.

Historically, Duluth has a lot of old areas known as Brownfields, or industrial and commercial spaces that may have been contaminated.

That’s why the city partnered with the MPCA, or Minnesota Pollution to Control Agency, to provide a redevelopment and clean up resource event.

Kansas State’s Brownfield Assistance Program was at Ecolibrium3 Wednesday morning, teaching business owners developers, landlords, and area government partners.

Angiee Stier, the city’s Economic Developer, “Some of these sites can sit vacant. You know, ‘Hesitation because we might not want to dive into this project because there might be a lot of costs involved with what’s found.’ So, we want to alleviate some of that anxiety providing resources to really investigate those concerns.”

The goal is to turn Brownfield locations into clean, green properties fit to be redeveloped.
