Biwabik washout severs water supply for Giants Ridge, Aurora sends water over to help

Looking at the storm damage in the Biwabik area, including a major washout impacting Giants Ridge

In the aftermath of the storm, leaders prepare to rebuild.

The nearly six inches of rain that poured down in the Biwabik area did some serious damage on Tuesday night.

Water washed away a portion of the Mesabi Trail near Giants Ridge, and also some of the utilities underneath it.

Gilbert Police Chief Ty Techar said they got the call around 9:45pm, from citizens who believed there was a washout on the trail. “We responded to the initial washout, and were trying to determine how to get to the other side, when we found a second, more devastating washout,” he told us.

That meant no water for the Ridge on Wednesday, at the hotel and the restaurants.

The city of Aurora has the ability to send over water, and that was expected to be working by Wednesday evening.

Rep. Dave Lislegard said he’d been walking with other lawmakers about ways to work on a funding fix.

The Wacootah Grille and The Quarry were open and had water. And The Legend was closed due to some cart path damage, but they will be open again on Thursday.

Director of Golf John Kendall said he’s never seen six inches of rain in one day before. “But the courses held up well,” he said.

Techar said they have found four washouts now along the trail.

Residents in that area are being encouraged to boil their water for now.
