Man charged with theft by swindle after allegedly using grandparents scam

An Ohio man faces felony theft by swindle for allegedly scamming three people out of almost $50,000.
The criminal complaint filed in Itasca County accuses Ra’Shawn Marquios Carter of taking money from two Grand Rapids residents and one in Hibbing.
Authorities said the scam involves the suspect pretending someone’s grandson is in jail and needs money to be bailed out.
However, Carter would actually meet these people at their homes, to collect. In one case, he even entered the home of one of the victims.
He was arrested on Monday by Grand Rapids Police.
