Man killed after being hit by Bayfield squad car

Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office says a man died following a tragic accident with a Bayfield Police squad car on Wednesday.

According to a release from the Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call of a collision between a pedestrian and a City of Bayfield Police Department squad car at 10:21 p.m. on STH 13 at W. Bresette Hill Road in the township of Russell.

Sheriff’s deputies responded and found the male pedestrian deceased.

Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office requested Ashland Sheriff’s Office to investigate the incident. Wisconsin State Patrol was requested to assist in the traffic reconstruction of the scene.

According to the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office, the driver involved was Bayfield City Police Officer Lane Koltermann. The deceased pedestrian was identified as Anthony J. Gardner from Red Cliff, WI.

The incident remains under investigation at this time. Ashland County Sheriff’s Office offers their deepest sympathies to the family members.
