Marking the service and sacrifice of so many on National Maritime Day
A look at National Maritime Day and the ceremony in the Twin Ports.
The Duluth-Superior Maritime Club marked National Maritime Day on Wednesday with a ceremony and lunch in Superior.
This was their 91st event. Congress created National Maritime Day in 1933, to commemorate the first time an American steamship came across the Atlantic using steam propulsion.
It honors the service and sacrifice of merchant mariners, along with so many others who work the high seas and the waterfronts.
The keynote speaker was John Schmidt, Program Manager of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers. He gave an update about the decarbonization efforts in the industry.
