Michael Carbo convicted of 1986 murder for the second time

A jury has convicted a Chisholm man for a 1986 murder for a second time.

They believe Michael Allan Carbo, Jr. killed Nancy Daugherty in her home. He had been 18-years-old at the time.

Daugherty was 38-years-old. The mother of two was found assaulted and strangled.

The case went cold for decades, until DNA analysis lead authorities to Carbo.

This was the second time Carbo was on trial. A jury convicted him in 2022, but the Minnesota Supreme Court sent the case back.

The defense tried using an alternative perpetrator case. But the jury sided with the prosecution.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant County Attorney Chris Florey and Deputy County Attorney Jon Holets.

“Our thoughts go out to the family of Nancy Daugherty,” County Attorney Kim Maki said. “This has been a long road to justice. The family of Ms. Daugherty has shown the utmost strength, and we thank them for their support from the beginning to the end.”

The St. Louis County Attorney’s Office thanks the Chisholm Police Department, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for their hard work and dedication in the investigation and assistance of this matter.

Carbo faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Sentencing is set for March 4, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
