Nashwauk-Keewatin Elementary School closed after extensive water damage

Nashwauk-Keewatin Elementary School will be closed for a second day on Tuesday, January 28th.

This closure comes after cleanup from water damage has taken longer than anticipated.

The Nashwauk-Keewatin School District originally announced the elementary school’s closure in a Facebook post on Sunday.

That post noted that the school’s offices and cafeteria sustained extensive water damage, and that the school would be closed on Monday, January 27th.

In an update on Monday, the school’s Principal Dr. Rae Villebrun explained that the fire alarm went off and that the sprinkler system was engaged.

“My office had a failure in the pipes. The steam filled the room and reached temperatures hot enough to engage the sprinkler system. My office was completely destroyed with water. The water flowed from my office down to the cafeteria,” said Villebrun.

Dr. Villebrun said that school officials plan to meet on Tuesday morning and will have more information on when the elementary students can return to school.
