National Weather Service changes cold weather headlines

There aren’t many of us in the Northland that want to start thinking about cold weather, but its important to know that the National Weather Service is changing its cold weather headlines beginning October 1st, 2024.

Here is what’s being changed:

It is important to note that “wind chill” is not going away, but making changes to these headlines emphasizes that cold is dangerous with or without wind. Moving forward, cold weather headlines will be based on the apparent temperature regardless of wind.

Johnathan Wolfe of the Duluth National Weather Service says, “Temperatures -40°F in Minnesota and -35°F in Wisconsin are when a warning is issued. Advisories are issued when the temperatures are -30°F and -25° respectively.”
