New voting law looks to help college students
Several new laws are on the books in Minnesota starting in 2025. One of them looks to make early voting easier for college students.
It will allow colleges and universities to request additional early and absentee voting locations, either on campus, or within a quarter mile of it.
The law specifically covers schools that offer housing for at least 100 students. The state believes that this will improve accessibility, making it easier for students with busy schedules, or ones who lack transportation. Michael Wall, who works with the Minnesota Office of the Secretary of State, says there’s other benefits to reaching younger voters.
“Studies have shown that young people who vote the first time they’re eligible are much more likely to be lifetime voters.” Wall explained.
“That being the case, if we can make voting, not only safe and secure, but also as accessible as possible, that these young voters, many of them voting for the first time, will be more likely to vote.”
These extra voting locations will be required to be available for at least one day, according to the law. Minnesota will also reimburse the city or county responsible for the expenses of opening the additional location.
