No disruption in voting after suspicious envelope left at Carlton Co. poll

Voting went on without disruption at an election site in Carlton County, despite a suspicious envelope left at the polling site.

At 5:28 p.m., election workers called the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office about the envelope, which had been left in a polling booth at the Harney Rd. site in Thomson Township.

“There was writing on the envelope identifying the envelope as suspicious,” Carlton Co. authorities said in a Wednesday press release.

No one felt sick, and there wasn’t anything other than the writing indicating it would be hazardous. Sheriff’s deputies consulted with the Minnesota Duty Officer, Crow Wing County Bomb Squad, Duluth Fire Department Hazmat, and the FBI.

They opened it and found “random photographs and a media drive” inside.

“There were no threats made in the writing on the envelope or the contents of the envelope to any individual, group of people, or political parties,” Carlton County Sheriff Kelly Lake said.

Authorities have not identified who left it, and the investigation is still open.
