Deep in the Superior School Forest it was big surprise for Superior High School biology teacher Lori Danz.
She was named a 2023 Wisconsin Teacher of the award during a surprise ceremony on Wednesday.
Wisconsin State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly presented the honor to Danz saying, "The inspiration that she brings to the students especially in nature. And just talking to the kids reading more about her, we knew that she was really one in a million."
Lori now becomes one of five teachers in the entire state of Wisconsin to receive the honor.
"This just means everything, seeing everybody here, my family the students and teachers”, says Lori Danz.
Both a high school and elementary school class were in attendance for the announcement. Lori has taught both levels, even re-teaching the same kindergarten students again at the high school level.
She says, "You know many teachers see students for a year, and I have watched literally hundreds of students grow up and change from elementary students to high school students and now to parents who come out here to chaperone and their students."
Danz has been very active in the programs involving the forest, becoming a pioneer for outdoor lessons.
Her students appreciating her hands on experience. High school junior Aaron Johnson says, "This is a great opportunity that she’s had and I’m super glad she was the one that got picked. I’m sure the other four teachers are great too but I’m glad to see that she got it out of everybody."
