Northlander helps people displaced by hurricane Helene find shelter
People from across the nation have gathered to help the communities impacted by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton.
Mary Oberstar is originally from St. Cloud but has been volunteering as a shelter associate with the Red Cross in North Carolina, helping people who have been displaced find shelter.
Oberstar tells us she has been doing a little of everything, from cleaning to listening to victim’s stories.
“What I’ve been doing is working in the shelter to provide a safe warm space for people who have been displaced by the hurricane,” said Oberstar. “I’ve been cleaning, lending an ear, connecting people with resources. It really comes down to whatever is needed.”
There’s more than one way to help. Oberstar told us people can help by donating to organizations like the Red Cross or by giving blood.
But she also encourages anyone who is considering volunteering to sign up. She says there is not only a huge need, but the work is deeply rewarding.
“It is incredible to see the people. The way the community has come together,” said Oberstar. “It has just exploded with people who are here to support their community members. It is just amazing to see.”
