One dead after canoe capsizes on Wolf Lake

A 20-year-old drowned after his canoe capsized on Wolf Lake, according to the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office.

His cousin, who has been in the canoe with him, called for help. He told authorities that they both fell into the water and attempted to swim back to shore, but the victim panicked, going under the water and not coming back up.

Their family was camping at Savanna Portage State Park.

The Sheriff’s Office says multiple agencies responded Saturday evening to Balsam Township.

20-year-old, Htoo Shwe from Saint Paul was found at the bottom of the lake and pronounced dead at the scene.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the cause of death as freshwater drowning.

The Sheriff’s office believes Alcohol was a factor in this incident.
