One person killed in fatal house fire in Midway Township outside of Duluth

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that one person was killed in a fatal house fire in Midway Township outside of Duluth on August 18. The Proctor Fire Department was dispatched to the fire on the 5300 block Old Hwy 61 that evening after the fire was reported by a passerby.

“After approximately two hours of fighting the fire, a deceased male was located in the living room area of the house,” explained Sheriff Gordon Ramsay. “The deceased male is believed to be the homeowner and the lone resident of the address, 61-year-old Michael Oneil. Positive identification is still pending results from the medical examiner’s office.”

No others were reported injured or deceseaed, but the house is considered a total loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the fire is not considered suspicious at this time.
