Our Heroes Tour takes retired firefighter from Cloquet and his family out for quite the ride
A great day to get out on Big Lake in Cloquet. And for Ken Klatt and his family, they usually do it on their pontoon.
But on Thursday, a chance to try something new, thanks to Our Heroes Tour.
The non-profit based in Chisago City was started by Jeremy Wahlberg and his wife, Kaelyn, both proud veterans.
They take the family to lunch, and then out on the water and have them try surfing or wakeboarding behind a big tow boat.
It’s expanded from focusing on the military and veterans to include first responders like Klatt, who has nearly 45 years in public safety. The last 20 were with Cloquet Area Fire District.
The goal is to provide memorable experiences for those who serve and their families.
Klatt told us that he often spent more time away from his family than with them, while he was serving the community. “This is a nice way to make up for some of the time I missed when they were growing up,” he shared.
He’s been dealing with PTSD from his work, but is happy to share that therapy is really helping. “I hope others hear this and get the help they need,” he added.
Klatt’s son Kyle nominated him for the award. The Our Heroes takes about 15 honorees out per summer.
