Police stand-off in northern Wisconsin ends with suspect hospitalized
One man is listed in critical condition after a stand off with police in Sawyer County.
The Sawyer County Sheriff’s department says they responded to a disturbance call involving a man with a firearm just before 7:00 Thursday night in the village of Exeland, which is about 40 miles south of Hayward.
Authorities say they learned that the suspect, 42-year old Jason P. Arnold had an active felony warrant from Washburn county and was in violation of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Deputies obtained a search warrant, and because of Arnold’s history SWAT teams were called in to assist with the arrest.
The Sheriff’s department says after hours of unsuccessful negotiations with Arnold, chemical munitions were deployed into the residence where Arnold was hold up.
Deputies reported that Arnold discharged his firearm at SWAT vehicles with law enforcement officers inside around midnight, but that no gunfire was returned by law enforcement.
Another round of chemical munitions were deployed again just before 5:00 a.m. and authorities say Arnold came out of his home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Lifesaving effforts were undertaken by Sawyer County EMS and Arnold was airlifted to a medical facility. His condition is unknown at this time.
No injuries were sustained by law enforcement or other responding personnel.
The incident is currently being investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation, the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office.
