New innovative performance coming up at UMD

UMD music, theater, and dance students are working together for a special performance.

When Music Moves and Speaks is a blend of dance, music, and theater, and is considered by the organizers to be a rare and innovative collaboration.

“It’s unusual to be able to work closely across departments, even if the two departments are in the arts,” shared co-facilitator Rebecca Katz Harwood.

Students have combined to perform individual pieces rather than one large show.

“I haven’t worked with someone moving to the music I’m making, so this is a new experience,” explained pianist Kylee Stroble, a junior.

One of the choreographers is Hope Davis, also a junior. “The opportunity to work with live musicians, it feels like the music is living and moving with you as you dance,” she said.

They are also elevating underrepresented composers.

Theater students will be reading poetry as well.

When Music Moves and Speaks is Wednesday the 26th at 7:30pm at Weber Music Hall. It is free and open to the public.
