Raising awareness for people with on the Autism Spectrum
Autism Walk Northland held their annual walk at Hermantown High school raising awareness for people on the autism spectrum Sunday morning. The annual walk also raises money, which stays in the local area supporting schools for their autism programs.
Nia Filipovich, a long-time volunteer with Autism Walk Northland, said there was an amazing turnout this year.
“It’s nice to celebrate and be able to accept differences and everything like that. It’s beautiful to see everyone come together,” Filipovich said. “I feel like what we do makes a difference.”
At the moment of publication, Autism Walk Northland has raised over $2,600. They are currently working towards a fundraising goal of $6,000. For more details about how you can help donate you can read more here.
For several years now, the Autism Walk occured indoors, but Filipovich said they plan to bring the event outside soon.
It’s always important to be cautious of everyone’s sensory needs and everything,” Filipovich said. “This is an event for people with neurodivergence and disabilities. I think once we get capacity back up, we’re gonna put it outdoors again.”
Filipovich said Autism Walk Northland holds a special place in her heart, because there are more programs assisting people with Autism.
“As someone who struggles with neurodivergence, and as someone who has sibling who also struggles with neurodivergence, it’s nice to see that people are becoming more accepting and aware of it.”
