Red Cliff band member heading to perform at MLK Tribute in Madison

Frank Montano is performing at the MLK Tribute event in Madison on Monday.

Frank ‘Anakwad’ Montano is preparing to perform in Madison on Monday at the MLK Day tribute.

The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa elder is going to play the traditional flute. He started making them about 40 years ago.

He’s proud to be part of this program, which is the longest running in the country.

“I remember our struggle with treaty rights, and civil rights. All of these things are good to keep remembering, to bring people back to how we got to where we are in this country,” he told us.

The program is at 12pm on Monday, and will be broadcast by PBS and Wisconsin Public Radio.
