Red Lake man sentenced for 2022 assault
A Red Lake man has been sentenced to 33 months in prison for assault.
Court documents say 20-year-old Devin Anthony Sumner had been involved in a relationship with the victim. The assault happened early in the morning on March 10, 2022, where Sumner because angry while they were in the car, and began physically assaulting the victim.
Officials say Sumner repeatedly hit the victim with a 12-gauge shotgun. As a result, the victim sustained serious injuries, including a broken hand.
Sumner pleaded guilty to one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury on February 9, 2023. He was sentenced on July 19. During the sentencing, Chief Judge Patrick J. Schiltz emphasized the need to deter the “epidemic of violence against Native American women, both on and off the reservation.”
