Remembering Peter Martin who’s been missing for one year today

The Fond Du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa community rallied together remembering Peter Martin, who went missing one year ago.

Community members of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa reservation rallied together remembering Peter Martin. Today marks one year since Peter went missing in the greater Cloquet area.

Ian Martin is Peter’s nephew, he says several communities throughout the Northland have shown their support looking for his uncle.

“A lot has happened within the past year. A toll has definitely been taken with the family. Within the spring or the summer we’ll be having more events,” Ian said. “As for searching, we’re hoping to get back out on a lot of search parties once the snow melts up. There’s been some searches done this winter too.”

In 2024 the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension reported 716 indigenous persons went missing throughout the state. However, throughout northeastern Minnesota, there’s been more awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives.

Kayla Jackson, is a close friend of the Martin family. She says Peter meant a lot to his family. Here’s some of her thoughts remembering Peter Martin.

“The way I know him, he’s really outgoing, He’s a really funny,” Jackson said. “He had a daughter and, really did a lot for her. Everyone got to see a really good side of him, and he has a big family. Lots of nieces and nephews.”

Jackson also added that the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Reservation has improved their response to families with a missing relative.

“The Fond du Lac Reservation, they provided, like a safety squad. They really worked with us immediately when we first started searching,” Jackson said. “Fond du Lac has really adapted and adjusted to helping families who are in need.”

Some of the indigenous tribes in Minnesota have created Tribal Community Response Plans (TCRP). The Department of Justice also says these TCRPs create a set of guidelines to help a tribe locate a missing person more effectively. Jackson says the Martin family has also seen support from other indigenous families experiencing the same emotions.

“Coming together in that way, going to those feeling brave enough to go to those things,” Jackson said. “I feel like there is a supportive community that is going through the same thing.”

If anyone has any tips or information related to the whereabouts of Peter Martin, don’t hesitate to call the Fond du Lac police department. You can also reach out to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
