Repairing damage after crash into Myers-Wilkins gym
Crews will begin to repair the gym at Myers-Wilkins Elementary School on Monday, November 18, according to the Duluth Public Schools District.
On September 14, a vehicle crashed into the gym, putting a hole in the wall and damaging the floor. Since then, the gym has been closed. Students have been having their physical education classes outside as the weather allows, and using indoor spaces as needed.
A 60 ft. section of the wall will be replaced. Floorboards will be replaced, and the entire surface of the floor repainted.
The project is expected to cost about $660,000 and will be paid through the district’s insurance.
The school says they expect to be able to use the gym after the holiday break. The exterior brickwork is expected to finish the project on January 21.
In the meantime, a crane will be stationed on E. 11th Street near the back of the school to help deliver the supplies.
