Seventy-five years of the Alworth Foundation

The Alworth Memorial Foundation is celebrating 75 years. In that time, the memorial fund has given nearly $58 million in scholarships to almost 5,400 students. The foundation focuses on the studies of math, science, and medicine.

There’s also a big emphasis on research, which was a clear at the foundation’s annual Education Luncheon Thursday at the Gitchi Gammi Club. They invited local teachers who could identify students who would be good candidates for scholarships and pass on the message to pursue science and math.

Executive Director Patty Salo Downs explained to WDIO, “Today, we’re focused on research that has been conducted by the Alworth students. Exciting stuff. From coral reefs to sharks being used to determine how covid works. It’s just fascinating. It’s like reading out of a science fiction novel.”

Representatives from the Natural Resources Research Initiative were there to show off their work in various fields.

Alworth Scholarship applications will be opening soon so students can be sure to keep an eye on that.
